Michelle Pellegrini, RN, MSN

I would like to recognize Michelle Pellegrini for her outstanding care and compassion towards a young, terminally ill breast cancer patient. This patient, who sadly had no visitors, was fortunate to have Michelle by her side, providing unwavering support throughout her stay in CVICU. When Michelle first met the patient, it became clear early on that the patient had little understanding of her diagnosis and prognosis. Because Michelle developed such a close, trusting relationship with the patient, she was able to communicate clearly with her and bridge the gap between the physician's diagnosis and the patient's understanding of her diagnosis. While sad, this communication facilitated by Michelle allowed the family to understand and reconnect before it was too late. Michelle did not stop there. Recognizing that the patient's birthday would coincide with her continued stay in CVICU, Michelle went above and beyond to ensure that this occasion was made special for her. Michelle reached out to ask about a care package for the patient and after realizing they did not have one, Michelle took it upon herself to create an individualized care package for both the patient and her children. The care package included teddy bears from Bostick 3 for each of the children, a warm and comforting special blanket, Halloween bracelets, candy, and balloons to commemorate the patient's birthday. Michelle's attention to detail and ability to connect with the patient during such a challenging time truly exemplify the essence of compassionate nursing care. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
