You could see it in her eyes that she cared, wanted to do more, and took a deeper look into your story.
My wife was admitted to the hospital for five days due to low sodium, associated with stage 4 liver cancer. This is the second time we have been hospitalized this year, and it was incredibly scary. We encountered many nurses, doctors, and staff members. If I know one thing, it’s bedside manner, compassion, and situational awareness. It’s about kindness, smiles, sneaking quietly in at night to minimize interruptions, and prioritizing the patient's needs over one's own. It’s about operating out of your heart and mind synonymously, which defines the person. Michelle brought all of those traits to the table. She was amazing. You could see it in her eyes that she cared, wanted to do more, and took a deeper look into your story. She knows her limitations, where she should not speak, but she also has the perfect delivery: just being real. When a husband can sit in a room and know that the nurse treating his wife has his wife’s best intentions at the top of her list, that is the only peace I have in this stressful situation of our lives, to soften the blows and emotions of unpredictable outcomes. We are so thankful. Michelle, nurses don’t go looking for a job; the job looks for nurses because they carry the largest, most intimate burden of being there every second. Every smile, tear, worry, and frustration. All the victories and losses. All the stresses. You have to manage it, and when you immerse yourself in the situation as a human being, your heart is also scarred by it all. Thank you.
