The way Miguel held her hand for almost 30 minutes and reassured her that we would take care of the situation in her best interest was just so comforting for her.
We had a situation with an 89yo old lady and her son who was being very hostile and aggressive towards the staff. Code green was called and security took care of this situation. Of course, the priority was the patient and even though Miguel Camargo, RN was not the primary nurse assigned to the patient he stepped in to both assist one of our newest RNs off Residency in managing the patient and to take care of the patient and her emotional state. The patient was very agitated and verbalized being scared that her son was going to get in trouble because of his actions. The way Miguel held her hand for almost 30 minutes and reassured her that we would take care of the situation in her best interest was just so comforting for her. His sweet words, how he talked to her, and how he demonstrated to her that he was in there to help her gave me personally a breath of fresh air and proved to me that we in fact have the best nurses on our team. He showed her compassion, he offered her comfort, sat by her side, held her hand, and did not let the hostility and the environment that her son caused in the department affect him. He was professional in all aspects of what true nursing is all about.
