He is the nurse who goes the extra length to make a patient feel valued in an impersonal situation. His clinical expertise is exceptional, but his ability to advocate for his patients and connect with them on a personal level is what truly sets him apart.
Michael’s dedication, compassion, and patient-centered nursing care goes beyond the ordinary. In every interaction, Michael embodies the epitome of what it means to be a nurse. I have had the pleasure to witness Michael spend countless hours counseling a patient and family regarding the emotional, taxing experience of their hospital stay. His ability to empathize with the patient and make them feel like a human in such a daunting, isolating situation left an indelible mark on both patient and colleagues alike. However, this perfectly summarizes Michael. He is the nurse who goes the extra length to make a patient feel valued in an impersonal situation. His clinical expertise is exceptional, but his ability to advocate for his patients and connect with them on a personal level is what truly sets him apart. Additionally, Michael approaches each shift with an uplifting and cheerful attitude. He demonstrates silent leadership through his unwavering support of his colleagues. He is constantly inquiring how he can assist his peers to make their day easier. I have witnessed first-hand Michael’s team player attitude by his ability to take on extremely emotionally taxing patient assignments to give another burnt-out nurse a break. I have observed Michael offer words of encouragement and guidance to a nervous, newly graduated, fresh-off orientation nurse. Michael truly goes above and beyond to curate a working environment where every team member feels respected and valued. He even spearheads the unit retention committee to give people an avenue to feel connected and create a sense of community among peers. It is without hesitation that I wholeheartedly nominate Michael for the DAISY Award. His impact on patients, families and colleagues extends far beyond the hospital walls. It has been an absolute honor to call Michael a colleague and a friend.
