In November we had a patient admitted to 3Tower for Calciphylaxis, a condition that is terrible to deal with as it has no real cure or way to heal. When the would team received the consult one of the wound nurses went to see this patient and decided there was nothing that could be done but paint the areas with betadine.
But when Mike Rankin received the consult, he took it upon himself to fight for this patient, he felt she needed debridement, and asked the surgery team to debride her. The surgery team said they did not want to tackle this as her wounds were so large. Mike arranged to have her taken to PACU for conscious sedation and then he went about debriding her daily for weeks with the help of another wound care nurse.
The patient is still hospitalized, and Mike is still doing wound care. The patient now has several areas that are healed with healthy skin she has a brighter future without the terrible appearance of Calciphylaxis covering her body.
I really commend Mike for sticking with this patient and fighting for her when so many just more or less wrote her condition off.

Thank you, Mike, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
