On one particular clinical day, Miledy came to me very upset because she felt that the care given to a patient in the MICU was unacceptable. The patient, who was confused at times, was undergoing a swallow study with the Speech Therapist. The patient, who was in his mid-30s, was becoming increasingly agitated and uncomfortable due to needing to be cleaned up after a bowel movement. Despite the patient's obvious inability to participate fully, Miledy witnessed the Speech therapist becoming impatient and almost yelling at the patient to take a sip of water and swallow. This upset Miledy, who came to me for guidance. I agreed fully with Miledy's cause for concern, and we immediately entered the patient's room and asked the Therapist if we could clean up the patient and calm him down before she proceeded to complete her assessment. The Therapist obliged, and we informed her we would contact her when the patient was in a calmer, less agitated state. We can teach a lot of things as instructors, but that day, Miledy displayed an unteachable characteristic of being a professional nurse, and that was one of empathy, compassion, and advocacy.
