Miriam gives everything of herself to her patients and families.
Miriam Czech's nursing practices clearly exemplify clinical excellence and compassionate care. Miriam inspires her coworkers with her empathy and insight, providing a daily example of the values we aspire to.
Miriam has had nursing experience abroad. One day we were discussing her experiences working with refugees fleeing violence in the Middle East and Africa. She relayed that from her perspective, our patients at CHLA are all refugees as well in their own way. She explained that they are displaced from their normal family routines and support systems by a medical concern or emergency. She feels that one of our key functions is to support families as they adjust to their personal crises and seek to resume their normal lives. Miriam brings this level of compassionate understanding to all her work.
Having worked in Africa during the Ebola virus epidemic, Miriam's experience with infectious diseases has been exceptionally helpful during the COVID pandemic. Miriam quickly volunteered to facilitate the implementation of our department preprocedural COVID19 testing. Early on, she guided our discussions about the patient path of travel to prevent exposures in our department. Miriam does not hesitate to reach out for assistance with challenging infection prevention questions that impact our patient's preoperative preparation. Miriam shows empathy with our patients during her conversations with parents as she coordinates preprocedural COVID testing and screens our patients and families for illness. Our parents often complement Miriam for the attention she gives caregivers during her COVID coordination and preop calls. Miriam extends this care and attention when she works with our patients during their preop visits and on the day of surgery. Miriam actively listens and puts the patient and family at ease. Miriam gives everything of herself to her patients and families.
Miriam is always the first person to volunteer to care for a challenging patient or family. She volunteers for the most difficult and time-consuming assignments in the unit. She actively seeks opportunities to assist her coworkers when challenging situations are encountered. Miriam is always willing to adjust her schedule or assignments to accommodate the needs of the department.
Miriam is an amazing nurse and a wonderful asset to our department.
