Missy and I had a young patient together who had been admitted a couple of days prior for complications related to alcohol use/withdrawal. This patient was having a very hard time caring for themselves at home for what seemed like a few months and, as a result, had a very large and severe matting problem in their hair. They had long hair, and it had clearly not been brushed in weeks (or more). The family brought some detangler and a good hairbrush but did not help the patient, who was extremely tremorous, to get their hair untangled. Missy was busy, as we all were, but she still dedicated a few hours cumulatively throughout the day to getting all of the matting out of the patient's hair. The patient was so relieved to have it done as they were concerned they would need to shave her bald. Missy is an incredible nurse, but during this encounter, I feel as though I learned so much about how to treat a patient who is experiencing a crisis in their life.
