Dr. Saftner's online voice threads were excellent; concise, not too much information, clinically relevant, well organized, and easy to follow.
Dr. Missy Saftner has displayed exceptional mentorship through clinical practice expertise, the development of high level courses, DNP project advisement, and engaging in meaningful nurse-midwifery and APRN professional activities. I have worked with Dr. Saftner for the past 3 years in her role as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. Dr. Saftner has consistently demonstrated the highest level of educational scholarship and innovative teaching/learning strategies and contributed significantly to enhancing the quality of the nurse-midwifery program. We have co-taught several courses together, including didactic and clinical reproductive health courses and DNP seminar courses. Her capacity to enhance the quality of teaching through well designed online and face-to-face didactic and clinical teaching strategies is outstanding, which is evidenced in consistently high marks in her teaching evaluations, as well as numerous positive comments, such as: “Great job presenting material in a way to facilitate a variety of learning styles”; “One of the best instructors I have ever had. The information was concise and applicable”; and “Her online voice threads were excellent; concise, not too much information, clinically relevant, well organized, and easy to follow.” She spearheaded a more engaged method of teaching the nurse-midwifery students how to utilize the typhon recording system, namely the use of more advanced students mentoring students who were beginning the first clinical semester.

She maintains a clinical practice in an ambulatory care setting, providing direct women’s care to a diverse patient population and serving as preceptor to family nurse practitioner students. Dr. Saftner serves on both national and state ACNM committees and was recently selected to represent all CNMs in Minnesota on the Minnesota Board of Nursing APRN Advisory committee. She is currently on the Minnesota ACNM Affiliate Nominating committee and is the ALC representative and will coordinate lobby day. She is passionate about lobbying for APRN advancement and has spearheaded many student activities that engage them in this process.

I have come to rely on Ms. Saftner’s strong skill set to improve my own teaching effectiveness. She is highly skillful in developing clear, consistent, and high educational standards and the students know they can expect good follow through whenever they need assistance or support. I can count on Ms. Saftner to maintain rigorous and timely contact with students and clinical preceptors, and to seriously engage in all other aspects of her teaching responsibilities, including project advising, case study development for OSCEs, and the development of evaluation measures. She also demonstrates honesty, integrity, intelligence, and clarity in her interactions with others, which promotes trust among and her colleagues and students. Her work ethic, commitment to nurse-midwifery education, scholarship, and practice is exemplar and serves to both support and empower her students to reach their own potential. She has done a particularly good job of combining her scholarship with her teaching and leadership roles, serving as a good role model for students and community nurse-midwives.
