I have had the pleasure of working beside Misty for the past six years in the Emergency Department, and every shift with her has been a learning opportunity for me to become a better nurse. She has a lifetime of experience and knowledge that she has invested in herself, which guides her ethical nursing practice with her patients under the most extreme pressures she has ever experienced in the ED. She has experienced difficult situations that most nurses would have been intimidated by, but she has overcome fear with the strength in her mindset that she will give the best care no matter the challenge that rolls through the emergency department's doors. She is kind to our staff and takes time out of her shift to teach the nurses, and cares about building the emergency department team stronger than ever. Just recently, we had a patient who arrived at the ER on Christmas Eve that was unconscious and in septic shock. The blood pressure was low, the heart rate was fast, she had a fever, and she was very dirty from the inability to care for herself for several days. In between hanging critical time-sensitive medications, drawing blood, collaborating with lab, monitoring vital signs, performing medical procedures, doing EKGs, starting IVs, and assessing her deteriorating respiratory status, Misty did not miss a detail but gathered soap and water and cleaned this patient head to toe ensuring that she was well cared for in every aspect and that she was properly washed after having no bath for several days. Most nurses are task-focused on interventions and overlook the social aspect of how to really care for a sick patient. This woman needed everything, and Misty did not let her down. She worked hard, making sure all meds were administered to stabilize the patient's severe septic shock. This patient stabilized after hours in the Emergency Department, and she was admitted to the ICU. This sick patient arrived very ill and could have died if interventions were not performed with efficiency and precision. Misty did just this, working with the doctor and her ER team. The memory of this case will always stay with me because Misty truly modeled how difficult the role of an ER RN can be and provided the best care at the bedside to this vulnerable woman. She is a nurse who will fight to save every life that passes through our doors of the Emergency Department and apply her exceptional knowledge and skills to ensure the most dignified care is given. I want to recognize her for her ability to inspire her team and patients to do better and be better.
