Mitchell Clements, RN
I would like to commend Mitchell Clements for the exceptional compassion, dedication, and care he provided to my stepfather during one of the most difficult times in his life.
My stepfather was suddenly diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome. What started as weakness in his legs quickly progressed, eventually leaving him unable to move them and causing weakness in his arms as well.
Prior to this diagnosis, he lived a very active life. He worked a labor-intensive job and spent much of his free time gardening, which was his favorite hobby. Losing his mobility so suddenly was devastating and frightening for him.
After being taken to the ER at Corewell Dearborn, he received expedited care and underwent numerous tests before receiving his diagnosis. Mitch stood out in a truly remarkable way. He consistently demonstrated empathy, encouragement, and genuine passion for patient care. He not only ensured my stepfather received excellent daily care, but he also went above and beyond even when he was not assigned as his nurse.
Despite having other patients and responsibilities, Mitch would still make time to visit my stepfather’s room, help him get out of bed, and into his chair and take him for walks through the halls. Those moments may have seemed small to others, but they meant everything to my stepfather and our family. Being able to get out of the room, move around, and simply look out the windows helped ease the emotional and mental toll of a long hospital stay.
Mitch’s kindness gave him hope and dignity during a time when he felt scared, vulnerable, and helpless. What made Mitch exceptional was not just the medical care he provided, but the humanity he showed. He treated my stepfather like a person, not just a patient. His willingness to go out of his way, even when he was not assigned to him, speaks volumes about his character and commitment to nursing.
Mitch will likely never fully know the impact he had on my stepfather’s recovery journey, but our family will never forget it.
