Around 01 30 AM, a Code Grey was called in 9A2, and a few minutes later, on 9C2. Another nurse and I both responded since she was covering the med/surg area and I was covering the ICUs that night. I arrived in the Vascular ICU to respond for the code and saw a woman who was screaming and trying to argue with all the nurses and the security who were trying to ask her to go back to her room on 9A2. (This was the same patient whom the Code Grey was called for on 9A2 who went running and screaming into 9C2). She was extremely confused, loud and disturbing the patients in VICU. After much refusal, they were finally able to move her out of the VICU, but she remained loud and combative to anyone who would get close to her in the 9C1 hallway.
While wheeling the patient back to 9A2, Mitul heard the patient screaming and came from his patient's room to help the security officers. He brought a recliner instead of the wheelchair and assisted in pushing the patient back to her room. It wasn't an easy transport. Each officer had to hold an arm while Mitul held her legs to prevent her from hitting or kicking anyone that came close to her. When we arrived at her room, we found out that the patient was in a semi-private room, with a roommate. We made the decision to move the patient to a private room. Before we could even call Bed File to ask for an available video room, Mitul volunteered an empty video private room on 9C1 where he was in Charge. We had to go through the same process of pushing the patient on a recliner back to 9C1. It took 3 security officers plus Mitul to place the patient in the bed and put her on leather restraints.
It was an hour and a half of dealing with this very unruly and aggressive patient. We would like to commend Mitul for going above and beyond. It wasn't his unit or his patient involved, but his great initiative and leadership played a tremendous role to keep the patient and the staff safe. He truly went above and beyond, a true epitome of a team member, very TGH!
