I am writing to formally recognize Mohamad, also known as “Moe,” a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit, for the extraordinary care and compassion they provided to my brother during his recent hospitalization.

My brother has a particularly complex medical and developmental history. He has autism, developmental delays, a speech impediment, type 1 diabetes, advanced heart failure and declining kidney function. Because of his autism and developmental challenges, hospitalization can be especially frightening and difficult for him. He may become agitated, have difficulty communicating what he needs or require additional time, patience and reassurance when receiving medications and treatment.

He recently spent nearly two weeks in the hospital, including time in the ICU. During an extremely difficult and frightening period for our family. Moe’s compassion extended far beyond his assigned responsibilities. Even when he was not my brother’s assigned nurse, he would stop by his room to check on him, ask how he was feeling and make sure he was doing all right.

When he noticed that my brother’s mood was low, Moe took the time to sit with him, listen to him and offer comfort and encouragement. He helped lift his spirits, gave him hugs, and made him feel cared for and less alone. Those moments may appear small from the outside, but for a patient with autism and developmental delays who was frightened and seriously ill, they were enormously important.

Moe recognized that caring for my brother required more than completing clinical tasks. It required patience, emotional awareness, kindness and a willingness to connect with him in a way he could understand and accept. His presence gave my brother comfort and gave our family reassurance during an incredibly stressful time.

Moe has made a lasting impact on my brother’s life, my life and the lives of the rest of our family. We will remember not only the medical care he received, but also the humanity, dignity and compassion with which they treated him.

In a healthcare environment where staff members are often managing tremendous demands, Moe represents the very best of what compassionate healthcare should be. Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital should be extremely proud to have him on its team.

On behalf of my brother and our entire family, please extend our deepest gratitude.

Thank you, Mohamad, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
