Our unit has been caring for a patient with an extremely complex medical history throughout several admissions over the past few years. They had innumerable close calls and miraculous recoveries and were surrounded by an extensive network of supportive family members and loved ones.

This admission was different. This time, the family was faced with the painful reality that there would not be another miraculous recovery. Tensions and emotions ran high, and the hurt felt by the patient's family manifested into several painful interactions throughout the day. Monica demonstrated unwavering compassion and patience.

When confronted with denial, Monica showed understanding. When confronted with bargaining, Monica showed grace. When confronted with anger, Monica showed empathy. She took the time to listen and created a space for everyone within her care to be heard. Above all, she never forgot to put her patient's comfort, safety, and dignity first.

After several very challenging hours, the patient’s family had time to process and accept the difficult decisions before them. Monica’s extraordinary passion and unshakeable professionalism during the emotional moments of those hours were not unappreciated by those in her care, who expressed their sincere gratitude for her sensitivity and kindness.

Monica’s selflessness and steadfast dedication to her patient enabled a grieving family to come to terms with their pain and be truly present with their loved one during the most important moments.
