Nurse Name: Mona Howard NP
Nurse Unit: Cardiology Department
Situation: Mona provides compassionate and knowledgeable patient care on an ongoing basis. I have had the opportunity to observe and interact with Mona on a personal basis when she cared for my mother-in-law in the clinic and when hospitalized. She was patient, compassionate, knowledgeable and always took time to make sure we understood what her treatment plan was. Recently I have also worked with Mona on a professional basis at the Luther Dialysis unit which also exemplified her expertise and compassion. In one situation the patient was transferred to CCU with an arrhythmia and she immediately intervened and calmly assisted and directed his care with the dialysis staff and at the same time provided reassurance and education to the patient on the situation. The other situation was during a "code" in dialysis and she again calmly assisted and directed patient care as needed. Unfortunately this patient died, after the family was notified Mona took the time to explain what happened to their family member and listened and comforted the family even though the reason she was in the dialysis unit is because she had responded to the "Code" call. I
appreciated the fact that she thought of this patient's family and recognized their need for time from her and that they still had a need to hear what had happened to their family member. Mona's presence is reassuring to her coworkers as well as the patient/family involved. Thank you Mona for all you do you are a great nurse and great example of nursing at Luther Midelfort!
