Mona went above and beyond by making the appropriate referrals, chasing up my scan results, ensuring doctors came to see me, and regularly returning to check if I was comfortable or needed anything.
I would like to nominate Mona from A&E for the outstanding care and kindness she showed to both my daughter and me during my recent visit. I arrived at the hospital in severe pain with my back and was extremely anxious due to a previous negative hospital experience. I am a very shy person and find it difficult speaking to people I don’t know, and at the time, I was in so much pain I could barely do anything for myself.

From the moment Mona looked after me, she was incredibly compassionate, attentive, and reassuring. She not only cared for me but also made sure my teenage daughter, who was with me, was looked after too, bringing her toast and a cup of tea for breakfast, and later sandwiches, biscuits, and another drink at lunchtime. I am terrified of needles, but Mona placed my cannula with such care and gentleness that it made a very stressful moment much easier for me.

At one point, I needed to be given a pain relief suppository, and I was extremely embarrassed, but Mona handled the situation with such kindness and humour that she completely put me at ease, joking that it was like a “little missile,” which made both me and my daughter laugh and took away the embarrassment during what could have been a very uncomfortable moment.

Throughout my time there, she helped keep our spirits up by chatting with us and helping us feel more relaxed despite the pain I was in. Mona went above and beyond by making the appropriate referrals, chasing up my scan results, ensuring doctors came to see me, and regularly returning to check if I was comfortable or needed anything. She helped me move, assisted me to the toilet, and arranged for me to have a more comfortable bed rather than remain on the trolley.

At one point, Mona held my hand and reassured me that everything would be okay. Her kindness, dedication, and genuine compassion made an incredibly difficult and frightening experience so much easier to get through. Mona truly made a difference to both my daughter and me that day, and she represents the very best of what nursing should be.

I sincerely hope Mona receives the recognition she deserves for the compassion, dignity, and care she shows to her patients. If every nurse showed the same level of compassion, kindness, and dedication as Mona, hospitals would be much warmer, happier, and more reassuring places for patients and their families.
