Monica Ellrich, RN, is a treasure. On every inpatient encounter she is the role model of a professional RN. Recently, she was caring for one of our elderly patients, who until admission had been a functional and endearing person. Upon admission he was confused and unable to care for himself. Monica quickly surmised his needs and coordinated care with his daughter, the hospitalist and all providers. She helped the patient and family establish their wishes for POA and DNR status. Monica spent extra time to ensure he was comfortable, and communicated the patient’s needs. She understands that elderly patients require a special touch due to hearing and vision problems and other needs. Even her peers recognize her contribution to nursing. In all ways Monica meets the criteria of compassionate, nurturing, inspirational, collaborative, passionate and embraces diversity, especially in our elderly population. She deserves the DAISY Award.
