May 2026 Honoree
Monica Hodo-Davis, MSN, RN
I was on the phone with a Veteran regarding a highly sensitive situation when I approached Monica Hodo-Davis, who was serving as the charge nurse that morning. As the charge nurse overseeing 11 clinics, Monica has demanding responsibilities. Despite the busyness, she paused to ask thoughtful questions and approached the Veteran’s concerns with compassion and sensitivity—an approach that is increasingly rare in healthcare today. I provided an overview of the situation, and Ms. Hodo-Davis conducted thorough research, ultimately developing three potential solutions for the veteran. Such proactive and attentive care is uncommon in today’s environment, where many might simply pass the case on to another nurse or wait until the next day. After speaking with the Veteran, who was visibly distressed, she expressed relief upon hearing that someone had finally listened after three years of calling. The Veteran scheduled an appointment for next month. This outcome underscores the importance of providing attentive, compassionate care, and it highlights how what may seem like basic nursing practices can have a profound impact.
Thank you, Monica, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
