While Monica respected his reluctance to go to the ED, she continued to seek other resources for the Veteran.
RN Jackson displayed all the I-Care values when she stopped to check on a Veteran who was sitting on the ground in front of the clinic on her way in to start her tour. Upon checking on the Veteran, she discovered that his was BP elevated. Interventions were administered but the Veteran did not respond well, he was advised that it would be in his best interest to be transported to the Emergency Department (ED) for further evaluation. The Veteran expressed fears of going to the ED and refused the treatment suggested. RN Jackson educated him on the importance and benefits of going to the ED, by explaining the capabilities and resources they had available to address his needs. She displayed compassion and concern for his health and reassured him that her goal was to ensure he gets the help he needs to be on the road to recovery.

The Veteran expressed guilt and stated his reason for not wanting to go the ED, was that he felt responsible for his current situation since he had taken some OTC medications and “energy pills”. Nurse Jackson told him that he shouldn't feel bad, because he had no way of knowing how they would have affected him and commended him for coming to the clinic to get help. While RN Jackson respected his reluctance to go to the ED, she continued to seek other resources for the Veteran. She contacted the HUD-VASH Team to offer further assistance, while waiting for their arrival she continued talking to the Veteran about his concerns and seeking further care. He was willing to see his PACT Team located in Hampton, and a same-day appointment was coordinated in hopes that they would be able to convince him to get the care he needed

After the Veteran had his appointment, he changed his mind and agreed to go to the ED. Nurse Jackson explained that he had to be transported, but he insisted on driving himself to the HAMVAMC ED for treatment. Upon further verification RN Jackson informed the Veteran that he could drive himself, but insisted on getting a verbal contract from him that he would go directly to the ED. She once again verbalized her concerns regarding his health and informed him that she would be checking with ED to ensure he made it there safely. Before leaving the clinic, the Veteran spoke with the Nurse Manager. He expressed his gratitude for the level of professionalism, compassion, and care RN Jackson gave him. She displayed Integrity, established and maintained trust and confidence throughout the encounter with the Veteran. She constantly reassured him that his health was her main priority and advocated for him to get the World Class care he needed through her coordination with the HUD-VASH and PACT Team. RN Jackson’s decision to respect the Veteran’s wishes to not seek care initially, created a level of trust and confidence between them. Had it not been for the care and compassion she demonstrated, he might not have changed his mind about obtaining the care he needed. Upon follow-up with the HAMVAMC ED, RN Jackson was able to confirm that the Veteran had made it there safely and was given the care he needed.
