The patient came into the ED after not being able to sleep for 3 days due to medication complications from Cancer treatments and chemo. By the time she was admitted, she felt very lost and alone. This is where Monica comes in; she spoke up to the patient when she arrived on the unit and told her, "I am your nurse tonight and I will be glad to take care of you and help you with what you need." Monica helped to get the patient to the best location on the unit for her specific needs and gave her a gesture of which we all take for granted sometimes; she gave her a hug and told her that she was worth so much more than what she was seeing in herself. Monica had the ability to explain things to the patient in a way that she could understand and in an extremely loving way. She made the patient feel valued, safe and confident.
According to the patient, Monica single-handedly saved her life. In the years that she has had cancer, she has been treated by so many doctors and nurses; and though she has had some great nurses and doctors, she can't say any have been an extraordinarily caring, loving, patient, understanding and genuine as Monica.
