I had a left knee total replacement, which was successful and uneventful. I was then moved to Spalding rehab center in Denver.
I don't remember the following but have been given some details by my family and staff. My nurse, Monika, noticed that I wasn't waking up or staying awake as I should have been. She was essential in recognizing a very serious problem and in having me moved to the ER.
There, after much testing, I was diagnosed with respiratory failure which progressed to kidney failure. Apparently it was touch-and-go with me for a few days. Because of Monika's quick thinking, expertise and compassion, I am sure I'm alive today.
I returned to rehab at Spalding a week ago and fortunately have had Monika as my day nurse. She is always pleasant and thorough. I've been fortunate to be taken care of by this angel of a nurse.
