I would like to nominate Monika McKinney from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for the Daisy Award. A few months back, we had a patient and mom that we actually all fell in love with, but Monika really went above and beyond to show exceptional care to this family. The mother was an over-the-road truck driver. She was at a stop in West Memphis when her water broke. She was transported to Regional One where she stayed on the antepartum floor for several weeks. She went on to deliver her baby girl around 13 weeks early. During the mom and Baby R's stay, her family was unable to visit due to the long distance. Monika really loved Baby R. She made crafts with the baby's footprints and photos so mom could have a scrapbook of Baby R's life in the NICU. She also called to update and Facetime mom each shift she worked so mom could see how Baby R was doing for herself. This helped ease the mom's mind so much since she was not able to visit often. Baby R was with us for several months until she got bigger, was able to come off of oxygen, was taking a bottle by mouth, and gained weight. When it got time for discharge, because of her lung disease, and having only recently come off of supplemental oxygen, it was recommended that Mom not fly her home, but instead drive her home with another adult present in the car in case of emergency. Monika volunteered to accompany the Mom and Ruby by car, on her own time. They drove the distance together, stopping every couple of hours to rest and get the baby out. Monika then flew back home to Memphis at her own expense. This was an extraordinary, compassionate act and I know Baby R's mom appreciated it so much. Monika has been at Regional One for over 20 years in the NICU, having started as a nurse extern. She follows a great legacy of nursing. Her mother, Barbara was also a nurse in the NICU here for many, many years. Monika is very deserving of the Daisy Award.
