She was by far the busiest nurse in the ED with the most responsibility, she saw the rhythm on the monitor and noticed immediately that it was life-threatening ventricular tachycardia.
Monika was my ER charge nurse on the day she saved a patient's life. A patient had come in with intermittent afib rvr. His heart rate would go between 80-160 with no intervention from us. At one point in the initial evaluation, the patient's heart rate began to sustain at 150, and myself, the other physicians, and other nurses did not notice. Whether that was from alarm fatigue or the assumption that it was the same rhythm that the patient had been in, no one noticed it except Monika. She was charge nurse and even though that meant that she was by far the busiest nurse in the ED with the most responsibility, she saw the rhythm on the monitor and noticed immediately that it was life-threatening ventricular tachycardia. She quickly ran over to the other half of the ER where I was and was the first person to let me know that I should take a look at the patient again. Sure enough, the patient was in Vtach and was electrically cardioverted out of vtach quickly which saved his life. What Monika was able to do that day while juggling the organized chaos of an entire emergency department was amazing and I and this patient will forever be thankful for her.
