I wanted to take a moment to recognize one of our amazing nurses in Women’s services. Mother Baby is always a “happy place”, it’s just sometimes hard for those to realize that isn’t always the case. When things go badly either mom or baby or both it can be devastating. Last June, a Saturday night, there was a 23-week pregnant woman who came to the OB ED who was beaten by her partner and was lucky to be alive. The beating has been severe and it appeared that a knife had also been used in the attack. Both Monique and the doctor went to see this patient in the ED. By the grace of God, this patient had her heart tones and the baby survived the attack. Monique stayed at this patient’s bedside throughout her assessment and during the police interview. Monique held her hand, told her that she was safe, and tried to keep her calm. When I checked on Monique a couple of days later, Monique is starting brushed off what she had done but stated “ we are so fortunate not to see this kind of abuse every day.” While this is true the kindness, and compassion that Monique showed this patient that night is made her an incredible L&D nurse. I often hear from patients during rounding that Monique made the patients feel safe, well cared for, and has the room laughing while bringing the new life into the world. Whether she is caring for trauma or a healthy infant delivery, we are blessed to have her as part of the team.
