She made a lasting impact, not only on the grieving family but also on every staff member who witnessed her selfless acts.
I would like to recognize Monse for the extraordinary compassion, empathy, and professionalism she demonstrated during an incredibly difficult time for a family in our care. A Spanish-speaking family suffered the devastating loss of their baby, and although the infant who passed was not her assigned patient, Monse immediately stepped in without hesitation to provide emotional support and translation services for the grieving family.
Due to the patient passing overnight, we were unable to provide an in-person translator, so her presence at the bedside was even more important, as she could provide in-person translation and a comforting presence. She gently explained every step of the post-mortem process to the parents in their native language, ensuring they felt informed, respected, and supported through unimaginable pain.
She held the mother's hand as they waited for the rest of the family to arrive. Monse also took the time to play with the baby's siblings while the parents spent their last moments with their child, offering the siblings a sense of normalcy amidst chaos and heartbreak. She helped with post-mortem care by bathing and clothing the baby. Her kindness extended even further as she carried the baby to the morgue herself, treating the child with the utmost dignity.
Her actions were not required, but they were deeply meaningful and speak volumes to the kind of nurse and person she is. She made a lasting impact, not only on the grieving family but also on every staff member who witnessed her selfless acts. Monse embodies what the DAISY Award is all about.
