Morgan was nominated by a NICU baby's grandmother for her confident work resulting in reassurance for the baby's family during a scary time. After an emergency C-section for non-reassuring heart tones, AE was delivered with Apgar's scores of 1 & 7 at 1 & 5 minutes. Morgan was in the Labor & Delivery OR with Dr. H and resuscitated AE.
AE was then taken to NICU on Bubble CPAP where the family met Morgan. As a nurse herself, the grandmother said she loved that when Dr. H came to talk to AE's mother, Morgan came with him. Morgan explained what happened, what she was doing, and what to expect. AE's mother, R, said Morgan was great at explaining everything in laymen's terms. Morgan was very confident in her work and this made the family feel confident. "Nothing seemed to rattle her," the grandmother said.
After they were moved to the NICU and Morgan came in the room and smiled and said, "You can go see your baby and here's what we're going to do," R said Morgan's smile made her feel like if Morgan could smile, then she could smile too. This was R's first baby and neither she nor her husband had ever even changed a diaper. Morgan helped with that and she also gave breastfeeding help and helped R's husband to hold AE.
The grandmother who submitted the nomination has actually been a NICU nurse for 36 years and she now saw what her NICU moms and dads go through. She said she never thought that would happen, but "Morgan made what could have been the worst experience of a lifetime into a situation we were able to deal with and come through with flying colors. I couldn't have asked for a better team."
Morgan's clinical manager said Morgan has made the unit stronger. She has been teaching IV labeling to the team and is always looking for ways to improve the unit. She always puts the patient first and, in downtime, she sits and reads to the babies.
Because of Morgan's compassionate and caring efforts, her patients experience a level of care that exemplifies the impact nurses have in creating an environment where patients and families feel at home.
