I really appreciate all that Morgan did. She really pitched in without having to be asked. She actually sought out a float to make her feel welcome.
It is hard enough to have to float off your own unit, but to have to float and follow a float who was very unfamiliar with more “unit specific” issues, is a huge challenge. That is what I faced recently, when I floated to 3-1 for an 8hr night shift. The poor RN (4hrs) I followed was also a float and didn’t really deal with NG tubes and PCA pumps (we had 2). She also had to deal with an irate 38-year-old post-op patient who threatened to harm her because she encouraged him to ambulate after surgery. (She deals with post-op patients regularly and for his alertness, age, and surgery he was a candidate for early ambulation, though the patient was not happy with the suggestion). Needless to say, my shift started out with a bang and just kept going. If it wasn’t for this nurse, Morgan, I would have been farther behind than I was.
Morgan pitched right in without my having to ask, helped with the two patients who had the PCAs and the NG, and answered a number of questions I had about where I could find things on this unit. All while I was dealing with the irate patient who was yelling and complaining and getting report. She also checked on me throughout the rest of my shift to see how I was doing and to see if I needed anything. Luckily, after 2-3 hours, things got more under control, and I was able to leave at the end of my shift on time (that usually doesn’t happen when I float).
