I would like to nominate my critical care clinical group after they experienced one of the most gut-wrenching and harrowing first weeks on the unit that anyone can experience in clinical, instructor included! On Wednesday, we had the honor of helping care for a patient that was accepted by LOPA for organ donation. Our students provided compassionate care throughout the day and every single student stayed late so that we could honor this patient with a Hero Walk as they wheeled him to the OR to harvest his organs. That patient saved 7 people! He is a true hero!
That same day, we received 2 patients from the OR that were both had GI bleeds from perforated gastric ulcers. These patients exceeded the term critical, and one of them, unfortunately, succumbed to their injuries. They managed to fully immerse themselves in the care of these 3 critical patients along with caring for 3 additional critically ill patients. Never did I hear a single complaint and maintained respect, dignity, and compassion while putting others before themselves. I couldn't be more proud than I am of this group of students.
