As CHLA prepared to meet the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic a unit dedicated to screening for COVID and caring for COVID patients emerged: the MSU. In the early days of uncertainty, a group of nurses answered the call to care for these patients. The nurses of the MSU were met with enormous challenges and overcame them with grace and compassion.

The challenge of staying up to date with the information. The nurses banded together and double-checked everything with each other in a unified effort to ensure they were following the most updated guidelines.

The nurses of the MSU had to care for patients with diagnoses that were unfamiliar to them. There was a lot of just-in-time training to ensure there was no change to our standard of care. The nurses of the MSU showed great compassion in reassuring these patients and families. They also cared for children whose parents were in other hospitals, sometimes intubated, because of COVID infection. These nurses continued to provide the highly quality care our community expects from CHLA to any patient who came to the MSU.

The MSU nurses spent time learning new members’ faces and roles. Beyond answering the call to care for these patients' nurses, they also had to quell the fears of CHLA team members they had never met before. The nurses were tasked with being stewards of CHLA’s precious COVID resources at the bedside.

The most personal challenge was that every nurse who answered the call to work in the MSU has loved ones who are worried about their new unit. Nurses in turn worried about how not to carry the infection home. And yet, these nurses continued to work and care for the patients with extraordinary care and compassion.

As the Lead Nurses of the MSU, we cannot express enough our gratitude and pride in these nurses. As the MSU continues to be part of CHLA we wanted to take a minute to acknowledge the valued work of these nurses. Nursing at its core is answering the call to care for those in need. In this unprecedented time in modern history, we are proud of the dedication, compassion, and hard work this group of nurses have shown.
