ORMC has its own heroes in the MSICU who love their job and work each day to demonstrate admirable traits such as teamwork, joy in their work, and empathy to all patients and families and provide extraordinary care to their patients.
Although many units have provided outstanding care for Covid-19 patients during this challenging year, this unit has selflessly jumped in to provide the highest level of care to our sickest patients.
In the beginning, the hospital prepared for the frightening and unknown impact that this virus would have on ORMC. It led to teamwork among the ICU leadership to determine what care would be needed and how they could prepare and educate the team. MSICU leader Paula, along with Tara CNS, Val LS, Respiratory Therapy leader Vicky and her team, CCM Physicians, and all the MSICU team, worked diligently to ensure the best care would be provided to these ICU patients. Through long hours and a patient-centered focus, the team readied themselves with PPE education and safe practices, established safe PRONING practices, identified safe medication practices, and impressively developed an environment of trust and support to ensure that each team member was prepared to care for these patients.
Paula led her team exceptionally during this time and was always frontline; everything that was asked of them, Paula would do first. Paula and the ICU nurses demonstrate a passion for their medical and respiratory population and continue to bring patients to the MSICU to provide this level of specialized care for their patients.
The team has demonstrated a multitude of moments in caring for our Covid-19 patients. In the beginning, they were the virtual voices during IPAD visits or were the face these families saw as they said final goodbyes; later as some visitation was allowed, they stood alongside families as they peered through the windows of the isolation rooms. They have formed strong bonds with patients and families and have endured heartache for those patients who passed, and even greater ones with those who have survived due to the great care they have received.
A shining example of extraordinary care is the story of a new mother who nearly lost her life to Covid-19 complications. The team worked together to provide quality, compassionate care, and when she was well enough, they allowed her to visit and hold her baby. The teamwork and collaboration were exemplified by pushing her to remain calm during weaning trials, to help her fight through confusion and depression, to encourage her to sit up a little bit longer, and to make it to her next level of care.
After several months of care in our facility, she was able to cross the finish line in our Inpatient Rehab unit and return home to care for her newborn. Even though the patient left the ICU, she did not leave their hearts. The MSICU team celebrated her discharge at the Rehab finish line and continued to demonstrate empathy, support, and determination to help her to win this battle. This story was only just one of the many patients who can thank the MSICU for saving their life.
The pictures on the news and social media show the scenes of crowded hospital ICUs, nursing staff covered in PPE, tired faces with lines and pressure points due to respirators, and headlines calling them heroes. ORMC has its own heroes in the MSICU who love their job and work each day to demonstrate admirable traits such as teamwork, joy in their work, and empathy to all patients and families and provide extraordinary care to their patients. This is ANA's "The year of the Nurse" and 2020 was the year for the nurses in the MSICU.
