Some people are so special that even the sound of their name lights up our hearts and brings smiles to our faces. One of these remarkable souls is Myra Tamba.
My husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 esophageal cancer that has metastasized. Scared and hopeless we were introduced to his nurse, Myra, at his first infusion. She was extremely knowledgeable and explained what was happening and what to expect there and at home. We are sure all nurses at Dana-Farber facilities are trained to act accordingly. But, Myra possesses a touch of grace that lifts the spirits of others. My husband and I noticed special qualities that go beyond the usual. Myra has the ability to "read" people and to respond to them in a manner they appreciate. She can calm the nervous person; she can soothe the one who craves tranquility, she can humor those who want an escape from the mundane.
A bond has been established between Myra and my husband- as well as with others. She is a "floating" nurse for Dana-Farber and, lucky for us, spends much time at the facility in Milford, MA. My husband and I know that he will receive the great care of any nurse at Dana Farber but look forward to the times he has Myra as his nurse. Upon entering the infusion room, she responds to us with a big smile and a hug. Continuing to tend to the necessary tasks, she constantly stops by to check on my husband - to smile, to make a humorous comment to which my husband appreciates and likewise responds. Myra lights the spirit of others at the facility - staff, patients, family, friends. There is an air of happiness and peace when Myra is around. Even my husband's physician commented on how lucky he is to have Myra as a nurse. She is a genuine caretaker who has the ability to value people around her. She even phoned our home twice while at another Dana-Farber facility to check on my husband's progress.
This DAISY Award is a tribute to Myra Tamba. We want her to know how much she has helped us cope in these difficult times. We want her to know how appreciative we are. We want her to know what she means to us and to all others she impacts. Myra Tamba, you are a beautiful soul!!!
