It is our pleasure to nominate Ms. Myrna Handley, BSN, RN for the DAISY Award. In the spring of 2014 the Education and Training department prepared to launch its pilot program of an RN Transition to Practice program serving new graduate RNs. The program paves the way for newly licensed nurses to successfully transition into the hospital setting. With one new graduate nurse on board the education department sought an experienced, professional RN from the Medical/Surgical unit to support the new RN throughout the yearlong pilot effort. Ms. Handley was easily selected to be our first preceptor as she brought together the clinical expertise, knowledge and compassionate attitude required.
From June-August Ms. Handley whole heartedly agreed to be the formal nurse preceptor to the FHCC's first newly licensed RN. Ms. Handley's record of performance exemplified the kind of nurse who would be able to be both supportive as well as diligent in teaching, coaching, and facilitating patient safety. Ms. Handley facilitated the RN's successful completion of the unit based orientation and competency. Additionally she support the development of the new RN Transition program helping to work out problems and improve processes that come with new initiatives.
Ms. Handley's expertise in patient care and communication are strengths which enable her to provide complex care to patients and families while teaching and precepting . Her ability to model these attributes and generously pass the torch to the graduate was exactly what our new nurse needed. Her patient care is thoroughly aligned with the DAISY Award's focus on patient centered care and excellence. Ms. Handley has inspired and motivated our new graduate to be a lifelong learner.
Ms. Handley worked for 18 years on the Medical/Surgical floor. During this time she functioned as a Charge Nurse, a unit champion for safe orientation of new nursing staff and as a mentor and colleague to countless FHCC nurses. She is one of the few staff nurses to have actively participated in a nursing research initiative and is continuing to work on the this research effort. She is an outstanding role model for all nursing staff, exemplifying professional nursing practices and is always ready to serve and support the vision and mission of the FHCC.
