One nurse in particular, Nadine Rieben, stood out amongst all the rest. Nadine was one of the first nurses assigned to me when I couldn't swallow at all or hardly speak because of an acute abscess in my salivary gland. From the very beginning, she was kind, compassionate, always one step ahead of what I might need or want, and genuinely tried to help to ease my pain, always working to make things more comfortable for me. She took the time to explain medications and procedures to me and was so genuinely open with her warmth and gentle care, that I felt I had a friend and personal advocate, so comforting when one is feeling so ill and vulnerable.

She was my nurse for the first few days and then, miraculously again, for the last two during my stay, messaging the doctor whenever there was a question or concern. As my infection started to heal, I had some distressing gastrointestinal issues from all the heavy pain meds I had taken, and once again, Nadine's help, knowledge, and patient listening skills (so important) were just as thorough. She is an exemplary caregiver and I do hope she is recognized for the outstanding job she does and how well she reflects on RI Hospital as an excellent institution.
