Out of all of Nakia's exceptional qualities as a nurse to my 83-year-old mother in the Emory Cancer Unit, the one I appreciated the most was her ability to soothe my mother's fears about being transported to a department on the other side of the hospital campus for a medical procedure. She was anxious and frightened about the trip to the other unit. Nakia told her, "Don't worry, we will get you down there if we have to carry you ourselves." It was the perfect thing to say.
Nakia escorted her to the procedure and stayed with her while she was waiting, then got special permission for me to go back to the procedure room and wait with her. Nakia made what had started out as an extremely stressful day into a very peaceful day where my mother and I felt cared for and supported.
I know that Nakia has a challenging job as a nurse in the cancer unit. I cannot thank her enough for all the care, attention, and love she showed my mother that day.
