Nancy is truly an angel. She was so reassuring, calm, compassionate, caring about not only my labor but how she would make sure I was safe and so was my dad.
Nancy was on the elevator in, Rutledge tower (RT)T 10 rather than her home Hollings Cancer Center. Nancy was a Women's nurse in her past and she noticed the patient's daughter who was very pregnant was uncomfortable. Using her assessment skills she recognized the patient was in labor. She contacted the ambulance service who shared there would be a delay in their ability to pick the patient up because their ambulances were all currently dispatched. She then took matters into her own hands.
Nancy immediately found a wheelchair, pushed the patient (running) from RT to Pearl Tourville's Women's Pavilion. She continued to reassure the patient who was uncomfortable and scared, that everything would be alright. She was reassuring that she was a Women's nurse in the past and would not allow anything to happen to her or her baby. Her reassurance and calm attitude made her patient sure that everything would be ok. The patient asked about her father and Nancy reassured her that she would make sure he was ok. The patient was concerned that her father would not be able to get out of RT and how she could care for him when she was going to the other hospital. Nancy said she would take good care of him.
Nancy did get the patient to the L&D unit and went back to RT. In the meantime, she did notify the patient's husband that the patient was on her way to L&D and he could meet her there. This was their third child so both were aware that this meant there was urgency. Nancy was able to get the patient's dad in a wheelchair and get him to his daughter prior to the birth of the baby.
When I followed up with the patient after she posted on our Facebook page: "I am hoping someone can help me find contact information for the extremely helpful nurse, NANCY in Rutledge Tower. We were on the 10th-floor elevator this past Friday. She went out of her way to get me to Labor and Delivery by running down the street pushing my very pregnant and very close to giving birth self down the street several blocks in a wheelchair! Without her help, I think I would have delivered in the alley. If you know my hero Nancy, or if you are Nancy please PM me. Nancy is truly an angel. She was so reassuring, calm, compassionate, caring about not only my labor but how she would make sure I was safe and so was my dad. She ran down the street which seemed like a very long distance and never missed a beat. She made me feel like everything was going to be oy."
Because of NANCY, everything was ok!
