Because of my family situation, Nancy made me feel like she was my family and therefore my aunt did not have to die alone.

My aunt, aged 80, recently experienced a fall, spent some time in rehab, was transferred to the ED for a cardiac arrest, and was admitted to the ICU where she ultimately passed away. My family dynamics, in my own words, are not normal and therefore everything fell on me. My aunt's life partner could not make decisions on her behalf. I called her daughter who made plans to take my aunt off everything after she and my aunt's sisters could see her.

Once the visit was over, no one would go and be with my aunt until she died so I went and planned to stay until she passed. Nancy met with me and spent a great deal of time discussing what hospice is all about. There are not enough words to express how Nancy made me feel. She was supportive, kind, and treated my aunt and me as if we were her family members. Because of my family situation, Nancy made me feel like she was my family and therefore my aunt did not have to die alone. To repeat, my aunt and I were not alone because we had Nancy! Nancy deserves the DAISY Award because she went above and beyond her necessary care to make sure that my aunt was cared for with dignity and respect and I was supported well beyond my expectations. I am certain that the night would have been much worse without her. Thank you, Nancy!
