Nancy has been our first contact and facilitator for most of our admissions to the unit. She calmly educates, reassures, and solves problems on a daily basis.
I received a message recently to call the aunt of one of the patients on our unit. I braced myself expecting to hear about some concern about the care of the patient or a challenging placement issue. The patient was a quadriplegic and had bilateral arm tendon surgery and so required assistance for all activities. It was evident that this patient has been through so much. The family had been greatly impacted as well by the needs of their loved one. So I didn't know what to expect. When I contacted the aunt, she was immediately excited to hear from me. She had been there for her sister and nephew through hospitalizations and setbacks. He had been transferred to our unit from an ICU setting. The patient was transferred to a room that was not easily accessible from the nursing station. He could not use a call bell and being close and regularly visible so he could make needs met was a priority for the family. Nancy Lutner was not assigned to provide care for the patient that day, however, she stopped in to see the patient and family and made them feel welcome to our unit. Upon hearing their concerns, she immediately informed them that she would do everything she could to have him moved to a room very close to the nurses' station with high visibility. This is what the patient's aunt wanted to let me know. "Nancy is really, really awesome!" She noted her personality and that her bedside manner is the best. I can't agree more. Nancy has been our first contact and facilitator for most of our admissions to the unit. She calmly educates, reassures, and solves problems on a daily basis. I continually hear from grateful patients she has cared for who are nervous or anxious about being in the hospital. Honestly, when I see Nancy on the unit, I feel calm because I know she is a soothing influence on all who work with her and everyone will have a great day!
