My mother began her hospice care in June. Her nurse was Nancy Tadlock, a feisty, straight-talking, honest, amusing woman who treated my mother with dignity and care. Nancy visited my mother at least once a week, adjusted her meds, did all the things a doctor would do and more and most importantly, gave my mother hope that the end would not be the horrific series of events described to her in May. That was exceptionally important to not only my mother but to all of us kids. We had always promised her that she would die at home, not in a nursing facility. Nancy did an incredible job at helping us keep our word to Mom. Mom's last conscious memories were of the beautiful home she created and us there with her. That meant so much to us.
