Nancy went above and beyond and instead of going home, stayed to monitor the patient at her bedside.
Nancy took care of a 26-year-old patient after shoulder surgery. The patient was an IV drug user and had a high tolerance for pain medications. Nancy gave the patient a lot of pain medications without relief. The patient was crying in pain. Nancy took the patient to the floor and when she got back to PACU asked the Physician Assistant why the patient didn’t have a nerve block (she had one for a previous surgery and had no pain). It was time for Nancy to go home as her shift was over. Nancy called the Anesthesiologist and told him this patient needs a nerve block. The Anesthesiologist informed her that it couldn’t be done on the floor because the patient needed to be monitored for 30 minutes. Nancy went above and beyond and instead of going home, stayed to monitor the patient at her bedside. She grabbed the portable monitor and went to the patient’s room so the patient could have a nerve block. Thank you Nancy for going above and beyond to help this patient in need of pain relief.
