I responded to a call on Tuesday for a patient who was concerning to Naomi. She contacted the STAT nurses because she was concerned about his condition. She reported that the patient did not officially qualify for a SWAT but she was concerned for his worsening abdominal pain and "the way he looks." Her intuition was spot on; he was sicker than presenting with his VS, etc. I responded to her request and found the patient in severe abdominal pain despite medication administration to treat pain. Naomi seemed to get some resistance from the physicians when she was attempting to get them to reevaluate patient. I wanted to tell let you now that because of her advocacy for this patient, the physicians came back to the bedside and emergently took this patient to the OR. I believe if she was not such a strong advocate for this patient, his outcome would not have been so positive. She fought through resistance to make sure he received the best care and the most timely care possible.
