Each set of premeds, flushing the lines, and the chemo itself were met with her optimistic explanation in a cheerful and professional dialogue with me.
Cancer. COVID. Chemo. My first chemo treatment was at the height of the COVID Pandemic. No additional people could attend. I was absolutely petrified and felt alone. However, my nurse was an absolute superstar that day! She talked me through each stage of what she was doing and why. Each set of premeds, flushing the lines, and the chemo itself were met with her optimistic explanation in a cheerful and professional dialogue with me. Such a stressful situation and she absolutely disarmed the loneliness and fear I had felt. I so appreciate her ability to turn an indescribable situation into an afternoon chat. She was just so cheerful and understanding. I’m sure that all nurses stay during the first chemo treatment for a bit to see if there are any adverse reactions, but this nurse really worked to make sure the experience was non-threatening by asking about me as a person. If she was trying to distract me to make sure I didn’t panic, it worked! I’m so thankful she was my nurse that day! I truly understand what she was doing and why! Her cheerful conversation refocused the situation from negative to as positive as it could be. I just want her to know that she made such a difference to me and my care on my first day of chemo.
