Natalie Shore, RN
I am honored to nominate Natalie Shore for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Natalie demonstrated the very best of nursing during the resuscitation of a critically ill 3-month-old cardiac arrest patient. We received a call that the patient would arrive in about three minutes. In that brief window, Natalie immediately stepped forward and prepared the emergency department team for what was coming. She organized the resuscitation team, coordinated the CPR team, communicated with pharmacy, managed the additional personnel arriving to assist, and ensured everyone understood their role. In a moment that could have felt chaotic and overwhelming, Natalie created calm, focus, and readiness.
What stood out most was not only Natalie’s clinical skill, but her ability to lead, teach, and support others in the middle of an incredibly high-stress event. Two nurses who were new to Dell Children’s North and emergency medicine were present that day. They had never participated in a code or performed CPR during a resuscitation. Natalie mentored them in real time, guiding them through how to participate in the code, how to perform CPR on such a small child, and how to remain focused while providing lifesaving care. She did this while also leading the resuscitation, supporting the attending physician, working with pharmacy on medications, and continuing to monitor the needs of the rest of the emergency department. Natalie’s leadership directly contributed to the team achieving return of spontaneous circulation in under five minutes. Because of her preparation, communication, and calm direction, this child received the best possible care from the moment he arrived.
Once stabilized, Natalie immediately arranged transfer to the Dell Children’s Medical Center PICU through the transport team, ensuring the patient continued to receive the highest level of care. After the event, Natalie led the team debriefing. She helped create space for reflection, learning, and emotional support, especially for the newer nurses who had just participated in such a significant event. Her care extended beyond the patient to the entire team. Natalie’s actions that day left a lasting impression. She was clinically excellent, composed under pressure, compassionate, and deeply committed to both her patient and her colleagues. She stepped up in an extraordinary way and led this child's care with skill, heart, and purpose. Natalie represents the kind of nurse every patient, family, physician, and team member hopes to have beside them in a critical moment, and she truly deserves the DAISY Award.
