I have worked with Natalie Toney for a couple of years now in a 66-bed mental health hospital. She came to Behavioral health Davidson from the medical field. A lot of times when a nurse comes from the medical field to the mental health field it takes a long time to adjust. Natalie adjusted from day 1! She brought an energy and compassion for our patients that was amazing to watch. She is a compassionate, empathic listener that truly tries to meet her patients where they are. She is thoughtful, trauma informed, and passionate about the care she gives her patients, and her teammates as well. It is rare not to see a smile or hear her laughing with patients and teammates. She brings energy and joy when she works. To give you a specific situation of the amazing care Natalie gives her patients, I will tell you about a patient that we have that has a traumatic brain injury. This patient has a lot of struggles and at times is very difficult to care for. Our average stay at our hospital is 5-7 days. This patient as of today has been with us for 151 days due to legal issues and her mental health status. This patient has anger outbursts a lot. Natalie is so therapeutic with this patient. Even if the patient is yelling and cursing, Natalie can calm them and get to a place where the patient can begin using the coping skills she has been given. Natalie engages the patient and talks about events the patient likes and it takes the edge off the patient so other disciplines can give the patient the best care possible. This patient, because of their mental state, is a very difficult patient and some staff struggle with her, but when Natalie is working and has her as a patient, it seems to be some of the patient's best days.
