I remember snapping out of flashbacks with her sitting on the floor with me, holding my hands, and telling me I was safe and that she wouldn't let anyone hurt me. I trusted her in those moments in a way I needed to be able to trust for my entire life.
Natalya is the most empathetic, sensitive, thoughtful, and intuitive nurse I have ever met. Over the five weeks, we worked together, I learned to trust her more than I've ever trusted any other person in my life. I started to learn, with Natalya's help, what I actually like — my favorite color, food, music, etc. — because I was always controlled in my past. That felt really good, and I really appreciate the time we spent establishing my identity because she actually took the time to realize how important that was to my healing. But the really big thing she helped with was feeling safe. I would have really bad panic attacks and flashbacks. Everything Natalya did helped me establish the framework I now use to help myself and let others know how to help me. We used grounding and self-soothing techniques that I will carry with me forever. I remember snapping out of flashbacks with her sitting on the floor with me, holding my hands, and telling me I was safe and that she wouldn't let anyone hurt me. I trusted her in those moments in a way I needed to be able to trust for my entire life. She listened so compassionately as I described horrors in my life that I never shared before. I could see the kindness in her eyes, and she meant so much to me. I'll never forget her.
