It was so reassuring to see Nathan every morning, and he continued to set goals with my husband each day.
My husband was recently diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.   Our urologist in Flagstaff, AZ, referred him to Dr. "T" at Mayo. He was scheduled to have an outpatient prostatectomy. The surgery was more extensive than anticipated, and my husband was moved to the 3 East Urology unit. My husband's oxygen saturations dropped to the low 60's post-op, and he was in excruciating pain when I saw him in the nursing unit after surgery. I stayed in the room until 1:30 a.m., when my husband was finally resting comfortably. The next morning, Nathan was our day shift nurse. He spent time with us, explaining everything he was going to do for the day. He told us what the "goals" for the day were and explained what my husband would need to do. Nathan told us what pain medications were ordered and how often they could be given. My husband and I felt comfortable and confident that we were going to be in good hands and that we could get through this. Nathan was our nurse for the next two days. It was so reassuring to see Nathan every morning, and he continued to set goals with my husband each day. He was kind and compassionate but firm. My husband was reluctant to get out of bed due to the pain. Nathan timed the pain medications so that he was able to move to his chair for meals or get up to walk. I will give one example of Nathan's thoughtfulness. On the day of discharge, I was asked to bring our truck to the hospital entrance to pick up my husband. I was concerned because we had driven from my daughter's home the day before surgery, and I needed to get my grandson's car seat moved so that I could get everything into the truck. Nathan said he was familiar with car seats and that he could help me with this. On his break, Nathan came out to the truck and was able to unlatch the "tight" car seat lock. This only took Nathan a minute, but I was so grateful and relieved! Nathan went above and beyond to make the discharge day easier. All of the nurses were wonderful, but Nathan stood out.
