The Emergency department received a call at 5:15 AM that an ambulance was bringing in a one-month-old child in full arrest. ED staff started making calls and gathered all our ancillary departments. Lab arrived to help, along with Radiology and Respiratory.
Terri Langston called Labor and Delivery and put them on standby with the baby being so young. She also called 4 East charge nurse, Marina Sherrod, to ask for standby but Marina came down to be available. Lonna Thompson, ICU charge nurse came as well. House supervisor, Ken Voyles was involved the entire time. Chaplain Steve Tipton was asked to come in and pray for the team and over the patient.
Everyone was assigned their roles before the patient arrived. As far as teamwork, that was the best ran code ever seen at NEA Baptist. It did not end the way we wanted it to, but it was not because of the lack of quality or effort provided by NEA Baptist on this particular morning.
When you think of the definition of a team, what comes to mind is that we all have our own jobs, but when our team needs us, we step up and become one. That morning, NEA Baptist did just that.
