The event was an MVA that took place back in July early in the morning.  We received a nomination from an NEA Baptist Nurse Manager on behalf of her friend, the mother of the patient.

Dear DAISY Committee at NEA Baptist,

I would like to nominate the Emergency Department at NEA Baptist for a DAISY Team Award.  I am writing this nomination on behalf of my friend, the mother of the patient.  She got the worst call of her life that morning in July.  Wes, an NEA Baptist Security Officer notified her that she needed to get to the hospital immediately. Wes worked relentlessly that morning to find and notify family members of those involved in the MVA.  Casey Simmons RN, attended to her son at the scene of the accident, then called ahead to give the ALPHA trauma response team a heads up of what was coming their way.

Because of his critical thinking, the team started preparing for multiple trauma patients.  My friend walked into a living nightmare when she arrived to the ED at NEA Baptist.

The patient was in critical condition and the team was not sure if he would survive to be transported to a trauma center.  EMS was unable to get a blood pressure on her son and he was bleeding internally. The blood bank and lab were ready with 4 units of blood.  Dr. Richardson and the rest of the team worked quickly and efficiently to stabilize him and he was able to be transported to Le Bonheur where he was taken to surgery immediately.

A week after the accident, her son is awake, starving like all 16-year-old boys, and recovering.  The family and friends are so thankful for NEA Baptist's ED Team and everyone who responded to the CODE ALPHA that morning.  I am so proud of the work they do in the ED.  They do not get near enough accolades or thanks.  I want them to know they are appreciated for the work they did that morning and every day.  I am sure there are more people who were truly heroic that morning, but I can only tell the part of the story I know, so if there are others, please tell them thank you from our family.
