Twice a year, we honor a nurse who has demonstrated the qualities set forth by the DAISY Foundation. The DAISY Award was created for Extraordinary Nurses. The goal was to ensure nurses know how deserving they are of our society's profound respect for education, training, brainpower, and skill with which they put into their work, with special attention noted in their caring nature. DAISY recognizes nurses for both their extraordinary skill and compassionate care. The quality of compassionate care is so eloquently shared by "W," a family member who took the time to recognize Nelda McClellan for her extraordinary care and kindness. Mr. "W" shares that "Dad was on comfort care and had been well taken care of by all the nurses; however, Nelda stood out as one of the best. Not only was she skilled and clearly experienced with caring for end-of-life patients, but more than anyone else we have encountered during the past few weeks, Nelda clearly has a heart. Hearing our family story, she asked questions about Dad and seemed genuinely interested in learning about who he was, and she listened - That is a wonderful gift to be heard. Our Dad is so loved by his friends and family, and it has meant the world to us that now as he faces his journey, he is being loved even more by Nelda and all the others at Miles. She is the first medical professional who teared up, overcome just a bit by emotion, and for that moment of humanity and compassion, we thank her. My Dad passed away this same night. Congratulations, Nelda. Thank you for all you do and for leading with your heart. It is truly a gift treasured by the many patients and families you have touched throughout your career.
