They are a cohesive bunch of well-trained, intelligent, and, most importantly, empathetic and compassionate individuals.
Nelson 6 is collectively the best nursing team I’ve ever been fortunate to call my nursing team. They are a cohesive bunch of well-trained, intelligent, and, most importantly, empathetic and compassionate individuals.

I didn’t feel embarrassed when I had to reveal my drains in my torso, or by the mess made when my leg rolled one of the valves open and fluids spilled across me and the floor when I stood. They came in, put me at ease and cleaned it up immediately. It felt like my aunt had come in to check on me and cleaned up one of my chronic disease-related whoopsies with love, understanding and a touch of humor.

Nick is so detailed and thorough – nothing gets past his notice or alertness.

If I want a laugh while my drains get emptied, very cleanly and professionally, with a light and caring touch, Taylor is it – always firing on all cylinders.

Reena was an innovator and inventor for me, coming up with unique solutions to my difficulties while hospitalized. Sometimes the solution seemed to be right in front of us, and it took us a second to grasp it, but we were a care team on a mission – nurse and patient – and nothing was stopping us. She came up with a novel solution to my dry, scratchy throat due to breathing the dry hospital air – a nebulizing system of saline that mimicked a humidifier for me to inhale through a mask.

She also thought of exercises I could do in the hospital bed, lying it flat or at an angle, to strengthen my core and rebuild my muscles so I could raise myself out of bed in the mornings. That was something so basic that I was unable to do. Thanks to Reena, I’m regaining strength. When my nails kept growing in the hospital, both thumbnails broke into the nail beds. Reena angled Band-Aids across the cracks in both nails so they wouldn’t catch on anything. She was also just so gentle and kind, smart and sweet. I needed that when facing week after week in the hospital.

I felt so welcomed every day after waking up and starting my walks around the unit. Everyone would take turns saying good morning and asking how I slept. It seems like this would be a given, but to give so much to your patients, emotionally and physically, the previous day, then come in the next day full of smiles and happy greetings, is a huge gift not to be overlooked.

Nelson 6 is the best of all the units I’ve been hospitalized in, here and beyond, as a chronically ill patient. I appreciate all their efforts and work. They are nurses personified. I’m so glad nursing students are here often, learning from this team. This cooperative, humorous, passionate, caring team is ensuring future nurses have their skills and their “way” of nursing honed by masters of the profession.

I hope you honor them as they deserve, for all they do and will do. Thank you.
