October 2021 Honoree
Nena Baker, RN
Nena was present when a patient in the milieu started choking on a snack (cheese). It was not completely obvious, but her observations and assessments led her to believe he was choking. She asked if he was choking, he nodded "YES". Then he made the universal sign for choking. He was sitting down. She had him lean forward, then, she did the Heimlich abdominal thrusts on him. That was enough to dislodge the cheese. The outcome was fantastic. Nena trusted her nursing instinct and responded exactly as trained.
Thank you, Nena, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
